Ovarian Cancer

by: Jessie on Wed, May 28 2008

I was diagnosed with having an ovarian tumor shortly after my 15th birthday.
i had started complaining of a constant tummy and back ache by the end of the week My GP took one feel of my stomache and admited me to A and E straight away.On admission i was repeadtly asked if i could be pregnant! which i profusly replied no not unless it was an immaculate conception! disaprooving looks soon turned to extremly worried ones when they discovered i had am ovarian tumor the size of two rugby balls.
the next two weeks were a blur of highs and lows and many tests.
the day of my operation the 28th April 2003 i was an exremly scared and frigtened little girl, facing what most women would never face in a lifetime. My Pain was not controled when i came round and the paini felt can only b described as feeling as if someone had knifed down my tummy.
the tumor weighed over a stone it was a boderline tumor and contained cancerous cells. they also discovered another tumor on my other ovary. the removed the ovary that was beyond repair and left the other in hope that it would settle and the tumor dissapear. after 6 months of agonising wait an ultrasound showed it had returned to normal size. my surgeon described it as a “miricale”.After my Op i experanced post traumatic stress i had horrific nightmares and my long blonde Hair started to fall out,but after 6 months i was well on my way to being back to my old self.it was an extremly traumatic expreiance but i would not change a thing. it has helped shaped me as a person and made me so determined.I would not hav made the recovery without the love an support from family and friends especailly my mum, she really is incredible, i am 20 now and happily studying for my degree.

i learnt Cancer can try and destroy and control your body physically but it will never break you or controll you mentally. Be strong, cry when you need to but smile when you can, I Was told despite everything when i smiled even during the toughest parts it was the most inspiring thing.
life is to short live each day as you would your last,be strong and tell the most precious people you love them.
dont fight the emotions you go through embrace every one of them.
i hope somwhere this helps inspire someone.
love and life
