DOCTORS and my CANCER and their guesswork

by: DN on Wed, Jul 30 2008

When I was 57 years old I knew I had prostate cancer when my psa result came back from the doctor with a 5.36 score.

I went in to see my doctor and he told me not to be concerned because my psa score was very close to the 0-4 range for “normal psa readings. My intellect told me he was incorrect in his his assumption, however I TRUSTED THE DOCTOR routine and believed him.

Subsequent test revealed continued high psa so i started reading about prostate cancer on the internet. After several days of reading and his 8-months of telling me I didn’t have cancer I scheduled and appointment with my doctor and requested a biopsy.

He refused saying it wasn’t necessary because my test were to close the number 4.

I told him that if he didn’t schedule a biopsy immediately I would file a lawsuit againtst him for stalling me almost a year and telling me I didn’t have cancer.(if the biopsy did in fact reveal cancer).

First biopsy was borderline because of massive inflammation.

I called a doctor at John Hopkins Medical center and spoke with him about my biopsy results, and he said if my next psa even sneezes upward have another biopsy and to change doctors.

I changed doctors and my psa dropped 4.02 and then it went back up to 4.87.

The second doctor stalled me for another year and didn’t give me a biopsy until I was 59 years old.

The second biopsy did reveal prostate cancer on the right apex of my right lobe with a Gleason of 3 3.
MY TUMOR WAS .5CM AND IT WAS TO THE INKED MARGIN.

When I read the report I was furious because at 57 years of age a knew I had the cancer.

I lost almost 2 years being told by 2 doctors that I didn’t have prostate cancer.

I had my prostate removed immediately after reading my clinical reports and it is now present day.

In a little over 6 months I will be 65 years with a rising psa. Presently, my psa is o.09.

My doctors have told me that they do not have a clue where my cancer is and they want to blast the entire pelvic area with radiation.

I went to another doctor and he advised me to sit and wait until my psa rises to a point that he deems. necessary to treat the disease.

So, to all you prostate cancer patients and doctors who monitor this site what would you advise.

I have very little faith now in most doctors per se.

thank You

Everyone was on my case to get a physical. I was 50 at the time and it had been 10 years since my last physical. I guess when you feel good and have a fairly active life with no medical problems you don’t think about getting a physical because lets face it, guys just don’t like going to the Doctors to get a check up.
